Released in 1980, the XJ400 was a groundbreaking sport bike featuring a newly designed air-cooled DOHC inline-four engine with the generator positioned behind the cylinders to reduce engine width. It came equipped with front dual disc brakes, dual horns, and was the first in its class to offer a fuel gauge and voltmeter—all housed in a luxurious body. With Yamaha’s signature flowing styling and a lightweight, slim, and easy-to-handle design, it quickly became a best-selling classic.
